It's been 11 years since George W. Bush ordered an American invasion of Iraq after the 911 World Trade Center attacks. Then, President Bush was convinced Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, had an active chemical weapons program. However, no weapons of mass destruction were found, as reported by the Administration at the time. Nonetheless, a shocking report out Tuesday by the New York Times says that WMD were found in Iraq after all, but the Pentagon did its best to hide the truth.

Sources, namely former and retired U.S. and Iraq veterans, shared appalling stories of U.S. troops coming across dangerous abandoned chemical munitions during a span of time from 2004 to 2011. One such incident took place in 2008 with a team of military technicians charged with disposing of artillery left behind in the toils of war.

They told of handling shells that oozed of some pungent liquid that smelled acrid. "That doesn't look like pond water," said his team leader, Staff Sgt. Eric J. Duling. And after swabbing the discharge, the color indicated the presence of the agent mustard, a potent chemical weapon outlawed from past a war, that burns the skin, eyes, and airway of anyone exposed.

The sergeant gave the order: "Get the hell out." He knew the dangers of the WMD, and from that point on, an alleged government cover up ensued as officials tried desperately to keep the finding of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq from getting out to the public. The Times weighed in.

'The American government withheld word about its discoveries even from troops it sent into harm's way and from military doctors. The government’s secrecy, victims and participants said, prevented troops in some of the war's most dangerous jobs from receiving proper medical care and official recognition of their wounds."

Recently, through the Freedom of Information Act, the truth finally came out: There were chemical weapons of mass destruction found in Iraq, but not from an active Iraqi program at the time Bush ordered the famous, “Shock and Awe” invasion. All told, some 5,000 or more WMDs were located by military techs even when Pentagon officials say they were inert and posed no harm to humans.

"I felt more like a guinea pig than a wounded soldier," said a former Army sergeant who suffered mustard burns in 2007. This same veteran was denied medical treatment for "exposure to WMDs" and despite requests from his commander to be evacuated from theater, higher-ups denied requests.

Years later, soldiers in mass began reporting harmful effects from nerve and mustard gas agents. However, bureaucratic red tape is complicating their care. Some facilities are saying the ill effects reported by veterans are not related to the discovery of outlawed chemical weapons, based on the Geneva Convention Protocol, as ICRC explains.

"The use of chemical weapons is prohibited in international armed conflicts in a series of treaties, including the Hague Declaration concerning Asphyxiating Gases, the Geneva Gas Protocol, the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Statute of the International Criminal Court.[1] At present, only 13 States are not party to either the Geneva Gas Protocol or the Chemical Weapons Convention.[2] Of these, at least three have made statements to the effect that the use of chemical weapons is unlawful, or have indicated that they do not possess or use them or that they are committed to their elimination.[3] The prohibition is also contained in a number of other instruments."

So, why did the government allegedly conceal the fact weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq? After all, it was President George W. Bush's premise for invading the country in 2003 and targeting Saddam Hussein and Al-Qaeda for the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001?

s suggests that the Bush Administration would have a hard time explaining why officials sent soldiers into harms-way after leading them to believe the WMDs were harmless. A second reason is that the outing of the information could possibly fuel attempts by ISIS to locate the remaining unearthed chemical weapons – and use them. Finally, and, arguably, the most damaging reason why the U.S. government didn't disclose the finding of chemical weapons was that most, if not all of them were allegedly manufactured in European and American companies before 1991.The NY Time

Just last year, reporters visited a pair of abandoned bunkers that were contaminated by dangerous munitions left behind during the long occupation in Iraq. What they found was nothing short of alarming. "Two contaminated bunkers — one containing cyanide precursors and old sarin rockets — loomed behind. The area where Marines had found mustard shells in 2008 was out of sight, shielded by scrub and shimmering heat. The Iraqi troops who stood at that entrance are no longer there. The compound, never entombed, is now controlled by the Islamic State," according to Times.

Muslims in Somalia seized two Christians, a mother of two daughters and her cousin, and after calling the entire village to gather together, they beheaded them in cold blood. The Muslims were so absent of shame, that they even had the woman’s two daughters, ages 8 and 15, watch their own mother get beheaded. The mother’s name was Sadia Ali Omar, and the cousin who was also beheaded was Osman Mohamoud Moge. The terrorists, a name that is much too good for them,

The 8 year old daughter weeped and begged for someone to save their mother, but nobody came, and the two innocent girls had no choice but to endure the sight of their beloved being savagely decapitated by these heathens. Before they beheaded them, the Muslims proclaimed. We know these two people are Christians who recently came back from Kenya – we want to wipe out any underground Christian living inside of mujahidin jihadists area. One resident said that they were captured after suspicions were raised because the two Christians were not attending Friday prayers as frequently as is expected in Muslim lands.

The two daughters were taken in to an undisclosed location for protection, and still there is fear that the Muslims will try to track them down to slaughter them just as they did to their mother. One resident said. We are afraid that the Al Shabaab might continue monitoring these two children and eventually kill them just like their mother.

Two men with criminal histories

Two men with minor criminal histories have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in downtown Salt Lake City on Friday that apparently resulted from a drug deal gone bad.

First we must say no one 

should be doing drugs or selling them. 

But there should also NOT be any shooting. Good, they caught the killer!

Richard Michael Warner, 31, of West Valley City, was charged in 3rd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony, and two counts of obstructing justice, both second-degree felonies. 
On Dec. 19, Warner and Austin 31James Herring, 29, of Bluffdale, drove to 563 W. 200 South to make a drug deal with Mario Zelaya-Zuniga, 32, of Honduras, according to Salt Lake police. 

Once the deal was agreed upon, Herring got back into the driver's seat. While Zelaya-Zuniga was talking to Herring through the passenger-side window, Warner pulled out a gun and shot Zelaya-Zuniga apparently without warning in the neck, according to charging documents and a Salt Lake County Jail report. 

If one must be in a drug deal, 

they should, at least, 

have a gun for self protection, and 

ready to use it, before onother can harm you.

Warner then burned the clothes he was wearing and threw the gun in the Jordan River, the charges state. 
That sounds smart, but 
the police still got their man.

Shortly after the incident, police obtained surveillance footage of the alleged shooter and the getaway vehicle and released it to the media.

to ruin your day.

Due to the high media attention, Herring called police from his home in Bluffdale, where he lives with his parents, and turned himself in.

Oh how nice of them 

to put up with him until age 31.

Herring then gave detectives Warner's name, and they arrested him at his house in West Valley City several hours later, according to police. 

Not much honor among thieves.

According to court records, neither man has ever been convicted of a felony in Utah. Warner pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drug possession in 2002, burglary-related crimes and interfering with an arrest in 2003, and marijuana possession in 2006. 

I'd say he had a bad rap sheet. 

Remember one can reduce charges 

from a felony to 

"misdemeanor drug possesson." How about the burglary-related crimes, 

and interferring with an arrest in 2003, and marijuana possession in 2006. 

I'd say he is a chriminal offender,

 and should be locked up for a good long while. 

Herring has a conviction for shoplifting in 2006, according to state court records. He also pleaded no contest on Dec. 10 to misdemeanor theft, and was charged recently in Sandy Justice Court with another shoplifting charge and possession of drug paraphernalia for an incident that allegedly happened Dec. 18, one day before the shooting. 

Ditto the above. They are both no goods.

Florida doesn't submit homicide data to the FBI at all; Nebraska and the District of Columbia only started doing so in 2009.

The result: A number of high-profile mass killings aren't included in the FBI figures. Among those is the fatal shooting of 10 people in Samson, Ala., in 2009. Michael K. McLendon abruptly quit his job at a sausage plant and the next week shot his mother and set her body aflame. McLendon drove 12 miles to his uncle’s house, where he shot and killed five people on the front porch, then killed four other family members and strangers.

It is obvious that he premeditated this murder since he drove 12 miles to the scene.

If any of the victims had been armed 

this would not have happened!

Among the victims were his uncle, cousin, grandmother, and an 18-month-old girl. After being pursued by police, McLendon ended his spree at his former workplace, where co-workers had said he had been a reliable employee, killing himself inside the sausage plant. In a letter he mailed to authorities, he said he was depressed and frustrated that he would never become a police officer or a Marine.

Frustration at various events 

is usually a motive for the shooters crimes!

Facing a divorce and having lost his job, Bruce Pardo, 45, paid a seamstress $300 to make him an extra-large Santa Claus suit. On Dec. 18, Pardo’s divorce was final. On Christmas Eve, clad in the Santa outfit and carrying four guns and a device to spray fuel, he went to his ex-wife’s parents’ home, where her extended family had gathered.

He lost his job and his divorce was final. One failure would not normally cause a man to commit a murder, but when two or more drastic things happen, many of us would also take come sort of action.

He barged in on the festivities just before midnight and began shooting, killing his ex, her parents, three siblings and two sisters-in-law. Pardo then began spraying fuel through the house, igniting an explosion and subsequent blaze that killed a 17-year-old nephew. A getaway car, plane ticket and $17,000 in cash indicated that Pardo had planned to flee, but when he was badly burned by the fire, he drove 40 miles to his brother's house, where he fatally shot himself.

Here the murder 

was due to him being divorced.

The fact that he ignited a fire indicates that 

this was a premeditated attack!

He was also prepared to flee. 

When he was hurt,

 he could not stand it, 

so took his own life.

Paul Merhige, a 35-year-old with a history of mental illness and conflicts with his family, was invited to Thanksgiving dinner with 16 other relatives. He arrived late but stayed quiet, according to police reports. Around 10 p.m., he went out to his car and retrieved a gun, then allegedly said he had "waited 20 years" to do it. He shot his 33-year-old twin sisters, Lisa Knight, who was pregnant, and Carla Merhige. He also killed his aunt, Raymonde Joseph, 76, and tracked his 6-year-old cousin Makayla, to her bedroom, where she was killed. Two others, including Makayla’s father, were injured.

Mental illness and family conflict 

is often a motive for murders.

Talk about family conflicts;

This is the ultimate action!

Merhige fled the home, prompting a six-week manhunt through the Florida Keys, where he was tracked to a hotel after the case was featured on America’s Most Wanted. The trial revealed Merhige’s history of institutionalization, battles with anxiety disorders and threats to "slit his sister's throat" (which prompted protective orders on both sides that later were dropped).

Again we see that the 

shooter had mental problems. 

This not to say, however, that a gun dealer must not sell to a mentally unstable person. 

He is not able to judge the buyer's condition. NO restrictions 

should be allowed against gun ownership.

Since he threatened his sister, 

it was most definitely pre-meditated.

Protective orders" are worthless,

 as it stops no one intent 

on a crime against the victim. 

The police need to take further action to stop the event, 

possibly entry into protective custody or the jailing of the shooter due to his threat.

His parents, who had supported him with an apartment and car, refused to hire an attorney for their oldest child. To avoid the death penalty – and because his mental illness would have complicated such a sentence – Merhige is serving seven consecutive life terms.

Is it normal to 

"support a 35-year-old 

with an apartment and car." 

Naturally they 

"refused to hire an attorney" for such a son. Wouldn't you?

The Hartford Courant
The car -- driven by Mary Neliz Jimenez -- crashed into a tree, split in half and burst into flames, killing five. Kevin Cales, Jimenez's estranged boyfriend, was chasing them at the time. He was later killed in prison.

Family members said Mary Neliz Jimenez was scared for her life. Months before her death, the 21-year-old mother of one had applied for a restraining order against her former boyfriend, but failed to appear for a hearing, and the case was dismissed.

Again "a restraining order" fails the victim.

When she "failed to appear for a hearing" 

it showed that the killer had threatened her.

Early on the morning of May 27, Kevin Cales began following Jimenez, who had left her job at a local nightclub and was driving a car with four co-workers inside. Police said vehicle speeds exceeded 120 mph. Jimenez lost control of her car, jumped a curb and crashed into trees. The car was split in half, and the back half caught fire, killing all inside.

It is no wonder at speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour would cause her to loose control.

And no wonder that all were killed.

Cales’ car also crashed nearby, but no passengers were killed. Cales was convicted on five counts of first-degree manslaughter. Soon after his sentencing, he was killed in prison by a relative of one of the crash victims.

John Moses Ragin is charged with killing 32-year-old Crystal Ragin and her three children, then setting the building on fire. The couple's missing 5-year-old son was found with family members in South Carolina.

“Petitioner fears for her life, is afraid to live with respondent.” - Crystal Ragin's protective order, quoted by the (Newport News) Daily Press

Crystal Ragin, an Army sergeant serving at Fort Eustis, told a judge that she feared for her life and didn't know what would happen to her and her four children once she left the courthouse. Earlier, she had testified against her husband in a domestic abuse case accusing him of picking her up and throwing her to the floor.

Now why couldn't the judge 

have taken action to protect 

Crystal when 

she feared for her life?

The killer was violent with Crystal previously so she had every right to 

kill him in self defense!

The judge issued the protective order that day barring John Ragin from having any contact with Crystal. But before it could be served, the Ragins got into a dispute at Crystal’s home. Police arriving to that call for help couldn’t find the order in the system and let John Ragin go. The next afternoon, Crystal and three of her children were found stabbed to death. One child, John Ragin’s biological son, was left unharmed and taken by John Ragin to South Carolina after the murders.

This shows what can happen when 

the law 

does not take action 

with the "protective order."

A sheriff’s deputy arriving to serve the protective order 24 hours after it was issued found police searching Ragin’s Newport News home. Ragin, who was arrested in South Carolina, was found guilty of capital murder but spared the death penalty. He is serving life in prison.

You see, a court order means nothing 

with or with out it being served. 

Ragin was bold enough to search Ragin's home.

If the victims had been armed,

 they would still be alive today,

and the killers would be dead!

People should not be criticizes

for what they write or say;

this is true in the American Constitution!

Security forces were hunting for the gunmen who spoke flawless, unaccented French in the military-style noon-time attack on the weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo, located near Paris’ Bastille monument. The publication’s caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed have frequently drawn condemnation from Muslims. President Francois Hollande called the slayings “a terrorist attack without a doubt,” and said several other attacks have been thwarted in France “in recent weeks.” Charlie Hebdo Suspects Identified as Brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi, and Hamyd Mourad.

The terrorists can strike anywhere any time, so we must be ready to stop them.

France raised its security alert to the highest level and reinforced protective measures at houses of worship, stores, media offices and transportation. Schools closed across Paris. Top government officials held an emergency meeting and Hollande planned a nationally televised address in the evening.

It is good to do these things, but

it would be much better to arm and train the citizens

 to defend themselves.

This would cut the victims to none or one

before they could murder again!

In Switzerland

the people were armed and trained in 1935; as Hitler did not take over!

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which also left four people critically wounded, and was condemned by world leaders including President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, but praised by supporters of the militant Islamic State group.

Clad all in black with hoods and carrying machine guns, the attackers forced one of the cartoonists arriving at the office building with her young daughter to open the door with a security code.

The cowards can not even show their face;

this would have been

 a good time for her to kill the criminals!

The staff was in an editorial meeting and the gunmen headed straight for the paper’s editor, Stephane Charbonnier — widely known by his pen name Charb — killing him and his police bodyguard first, said Christophe Crepin, a police union spokesman. Minutes later, two men strolled out to a black car waiting below, calmly firing on a police officer, with one gunman shooting him in the head as he writhed on the ground.
Of course, they would go for the editor who condemned them; he paid with his life!

 and that is was a planned attack!

The editor was already nearly dead,

but the killers made sure!

Ten journalists were killed and two police, Crepin said, one of them assigned as Charb’s bodyguard and another who had arrived on the scene on a mountain bike. Among the dead was Bernard Maris, an economist who was among the newspaper’s contributors and appeared regularly on French radio.

“Hey! We avenged the Prophet Muhammad! We killed Charlie Hebdo,” one of the men shouted in French, according to a video shot from a nearby building and broadcast on French TV. Other video showed two gunmen in black at a crossroads who appeared to fire down one of the streets. A cry of “Allahu akbar!” — Arabic for “God is great”— could be heard among the gunshots.

They are proud to " avenged the Prophet Muhammad!"

The video showed the killers moving deliberately and calmly. One even bent over to toss a fallen shoe back into the small black car before it sped off. The car was later found abandoned in northern Paris, police said.

Corinne Rey, the cartoonist who said she was forced to let the gunmen in, said the men spoke fluent French and claimed to be from al-Qaida. In an interview with the newspaper l’Humanite, she said the entire shooting lasted perhaps five minutes.

The security analyst group Stratfor said the gunmen appeared to be well-trained, “from the way they handled their weapons, moved and shot. These attackers conducted a successful attack, using what they knew, instead of attempting to conduct an attack beyond their capability, failing as a result.”

Both al-Qaida and the Islamic State group have repeatedly threatened to attack France. Just minutes before the attack, Charlie Hebdo had tweeted a satirical cartoon of the Islamic State’s leader giving New Year’s wishes.

Charlie Hebdo has been repeatedly threatened for its caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad and other sketches. Its offices were firebombed in 2011 after an issue featured a caricature of the prophet on its cover. Nearly a year later, the publication again published Muhammad caricatures, drawing denunciations from the Muslim world because Islam prohibits the publication of drawings of its founder.

Charlie Hebdo is a hero in my book;

he did not let thugs

tell him what he could do or not do.

He should have armed himself, however!

Another cartoon, released in this week’s issue and entitled “Still No Attacks in France,” had a caricature of a jihadi fighter saying “Just wait — we have until the end of January to present our New Year’s wishes.” Charb was the artist. “This is the darkest day of the history of the French press,” said Christophe DeLoire of Reporters Without Borders.

In the winter 2014 edition of the al-Qaida magazine Inspire, a so-called chief describing where to use a new bomb said: “Of course the first priority and the main focus should be on America, then the United Kingdom, then France and so on.” In 2013, the magazine specifically threatened Charb and included an article titled “France the Imbecile Invader.” An al-Qaida tweeter who communicated Wednesday with AP said the group is not claiming responsibility, but called the attack “inspiring.”

Charb was warned many times prior to this shooting, but he did nothing to protect himself!

Obama offered U.S. help in pursuing the gunmen. In a statement, he offered prayers and support for France, which he called “America’s oldest ally.”

Mohammed Moussaoui, president of the Union of French mosques, condemned the “hateful act,” and urged Muslims and Christians “to intensify their actions to give more strength to this dialogue, to make a united front against extremism.”
On social media, supporters of militant Islamic groups praised the move. One self-described Tunisian loyalist of al-Qaida and the Islamic State group tweeted that the attack was well-deserved revenge against France.

Why is "the attack was well-deserved revenge " Is there reason (1 revenge, or

their needs are not being met).

In either case my "Plan for Peace

will assist them, so

there will be no reason to attack anyone else!

This can be done by the US OR Russia. Together we can do a lot!

We will teach them to acquire water, and to grow their own food.

5 Sure Signs the U.S. Economy is Finished

With the S&P 500 at all-time highs and Americans getting ready to spend more than $600 billion on Christmas, what's not to love about the "New Economy?" According to the vast majority of Americans... plenty.
It looked like a win-win situation.

In recent CNN exit polls, 78% of Americans said they are worried about the economy, with 69% saying economic conditions are not good. Meanwhile, a full 65% believes the country is on the "wrong track."

This should tell us something, but does it?

And the fact is, the gap between high- and low-income groups is the widest it has been in 100 years and the share of U.S. consumers who call themselves middle class has never been lower.

So who caused this?

But those aren't the only signs the economy isn't all that it's cracked up be. In fact, there are five unmistakable signs the U.S. Economy is teetering on the brink. 

1. The homeownership rate continues to plummet.
According to the Census Bureau, the share of Americans who own their homes was 64.4% in the third quarter. That marked the lowest level of homeownership since the first quarter of 1995. Meanwhile, the share of first-time buyers was just 29% in September, compared to 40% historically... so much for the "American Dream."

That is a  BIG number; it is directly attributed to Obama policies!

2. Real wages have been falling for years.
Median inflation-adjusted income last year was $2,100 lower than in 2009 and $3,600 lower than in 2001. And according to recently released data from the Social Security Administration, 50% of all American workers made less than $28,031 a year, while a whopping 39% brought home less than $20,000.

3. The labor force participate rate has collapsed.
The percentage of people in the work force has dropped to 62.7%, matching the February 1978 lows. A remarkable 92.6 million people are not in the labor force.

Obama tell us that unemployment is ONLY 7%, another of his lies. 

It is because a large percentage 

of people have given up 

on even trying to get jobs.

4. The typical household is now worth 36% less.
According the Russell Sage Foundation, the inflation-adjusted net worth for the typical household was $87,992 in 2003. Ten years later, it was only $56,335, posting a 36% percent decline. It's little wonder 40% of Americans reported that their families were "just getting by" or struggling to do so.

As a person living on Social Security, 

I can tell you, 

that decline is devastating!

5. The velocity of money has fallen to an all-time low.
In a healthy economy, consumers and businesses buy and sell things frequently and money changes hands very rapidly. But when an economy is sick, the rate at which money changes hands drops like a rock. Economists call this the "velocity of money," and it's fallen to lowest level ever recorded. With 76% of Americans now living paycheck to paycheck, and millions more dependent on government aid, it's easy to see why.

So again Obama has 

given us a deeply damaged economy!

Masked terrorists entered the office building in Paris where they murdered 12 people Wednesday by threatening a young mother and her daughter, she said.

If she would have been armed, 

there would still be 12 people NOT murdered.

"It lasted five minutes.” The terrorists, claiming to be with al-Qaida, spoke fluent, unaccented French, according to Rey.

The Charlie Hebdo newspaper regularly satirizes religious and political figures. Terrorists have threatened the publication’s staff with violence numerous times for its depictions of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

Wouldn't you think that after these threats, the staff would have armed themselves?

Its offices were firebombed in 2011 after an issue featured a caricature of the prophet on its cover, the Associated Press reported. Undeterred, Charlie Hebdo published another illustration of Muhammad a year later and a cartoon titled “Still No Attacks in France” featuring a jihadist this week.

Mutsuhiro "The Bird" Watanabe

"The Bird" 

Mutsuhiro Watanabe January 1,1918 – April 1,2003), POW-given nickname, "The Bird", was an Imperial Japanese Army sergeant in World War II who served at POW camps in Ōfuna, Naoetsu (present day Jōetsu, Niigata), and Mitsushima (present day Hiraoka). Watanabe was classified as a war criminal following the war for his abuse of prisoners of war (POWs) held by the Japanese military.

Watanabe beat POWs every day, fracturing their windpipes, rupturing their eardrums, shattering their teeth, tearing one man’s ear half off, leaving men unconscious. He made one officer sit in a shack, wearing only a fundoshi undergarment, for four days in winter. He tied a sixty-five-year-old POW to a tree and left him there for days. He ordered one man to report to him to be punched in the face every night for three weeks. He practiced judo on an appendectomy patient.

Watanabe openly admitted getting a sexual thrill from beating prisoners. Additionally, he had unceasing mood swings. One minute he would be beating a prisoner, and the next he would be handing them fistfuls of candy and cigarettes. Watanabe took a special interest in American track star Louis Zamperini. Zamperini was a legend to the villagers of Ōfuna, Japan, and Watanabe felt that Zamperini challenged his authority for that reason. Once he made Zamperini hold a heavy wooden log over his head for over 37 minutes, at the end of which Watanabe punched him in the stomach. "The Bird" would later haunt Zamperini's dreams, causing him to shake and sometimes even lash out. The Japanese word "Keirei" (salute) was used extensively by Watanabe to get the POWs to stand at attention while he beat them. Zamperini would sometimes mistakenly hear this word and stand at attention, awaiting the beating.

War criminal
In 1945, General Douglas MacArthur included Watanabe as number 23 on his list of the 40 most wanted war criminals in Japan. Watanabe went into hiding for seven years and was never prosecuted. He reemerged into society only after war crimes prosecutions were stopped and the U.S. Occupation of Japan was ending. During his time in hiding, Watanabe worked on a farm and in a small grocery store. He also visited his mother at a restaurant every few years to let her know he was alive. In 1956, the Japanese literary magazine Bungeishunjū published an interview with Watanabe titled (I do not want to be punished by America."

Later life
Following the Occupation, Watanabe became a life insurance salesman and was reportedly wealthy, owning a $1.5 million apartment in Tokyo and a vacation condominium on the Gold Coast of Australia.

Prior to the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, the CBS News program 60 Minutes interviewed Watanabe at the Hotel Okura in Tokyo as part of a feature on Zamperini, the former war-time prisoner who was returning to carry the Olympic Flame torch through Naoetsu en route to Nagano. Watanabe did not apologize in the interview but acknowledged beating and kicking prisoners. "I wasn't given military orders. Because of my own personal feelings, I treated the prisoners strictly as enemies of Japan." Zamperini forgave Watanabe and wanted to meet with him, but Watanabe declined the meeting. Watanabe died in April 2003.

Legacy
Watanabe's abuses are detailed graphically in Laura Hillenbrand's book about Zamperini titled Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption (2010). And also in Dr. Alfred A. Weinstein's memoir, "Barbed Wire Surgeon", published in 1948. In 2014, Japanese musician Miyavi played Watanabe in Angelina Jolie's Unbroken, the film adaptation of Hillenbrand's book.
